Understanding the nutrition, water holding capacity, and microbiome of your soil.

Activity details

This introductory soil science class covers the basics of understanding what’s in your soil and why it matters for healthy plant growth. Participants will learn how to identify key soil components and evaluate conditions such as texture, nutrients, and pH. The class includes a practical overview of simple soil testing methods that can be used at home in the garden. Designed for beginners, this two-hour session provides a solid foundation for improving soil quality and making more informed gardening decisions.

No experience required.

Please look carefully at each class description, as each day of classes will cover a different topic.

What's included

Tools necessary for the days projects. Produce and livestock are provided for the class.

What's not included

We will have a jug for water, but please bring your own re-useable bottle.
Please bring your own gardening gloves if you wish to use them.

Itinerary

  1. Discuss basic elements of soil nutrients such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium.

  2. Discuss how soil texture effects water holding capacity and watering needs.

  3. Assist in taking cores for soil samples.

  4. Discuss at home soil test kits.

  5. Perform and discuss soil test.

  6. Come up with a game-plan to improve the soil that was tested.
